HC Summer Reading Program / University Forum Proposal

I, along with the Clark Honors College administration and faculty, are working on developing a Summer Reading Program for the college. Here’s the summary of the program, benefits, etc.
SUMMARY:

The Honors College Summer Reading Program would be a new activity that entering freshman participate in. During IntroDUCKtion, they would be given a book by the Honors College, with perhaps a short explanation of the book’s meaningfulness. The chosen book would be applicable to a variety of interests, be provocative and have an inspirational message or story. The book would be discussed by HC students at NSO and somewhat in the CHIPs and Honors Residence Halls. [Read more →]

Community2: Community-driven high-impact volunteering

This is my very initial proposal for a project that will hopefully end up being my thesis.

Volunteering abroad has become one of the world’s fastest-growing trends. Young African faces abound in People magazine amongst celebrity personalities. The trend steadily has found its way into high school and college students, and continues in a host of churches and mission organizations.

These good people are driven by an inspiration to help people struggling with poverty and health issues. However, these programs on average make little impact, or do harm to the communities in which they act. Volunteers more often than not lack [Read more →]

Stop AIDS Campaign Video Explains Patent Pool

I was pushed this video through the University Coalition for Global Health listserv. I think it’s an effective use of flash and narration to convey an important concept.

Pin of Hope

View this video from BZ films, pin of hope. It’s about FACE AIDS, a national student organization to fight AIDS in Africa.

In other news, I’ve been quoted in the Harare Tribune (Zimbabwe), in an article obviously stolen from the Oregon Daily Emerald. That’s about as weird as it gets.

Hatian Hope

Last month, Haiti was rocked by a series of storms that left a devastating toll. With little to no disaster management infrastructure, over a million were displaced, and thousands lost their homes and possessions. In a world where 50 cents per day is a economic reality, these losses come not as a setback but as a death sentence. BZ films and Partners in Health just finished filming this amazing and sobering documentary. Hi Def.

OREGON FOR OBAMA!

How far I came on my list

Well, my list was far from complete. I didn’t swim in the willamette or even go to hoda’s. Seattle was pretty awesome, albiet a little gray and rainyish. Other highlights of my weeks of summer Include a day spent floating on waldo lake, many trips to powells, a really great gormet dinner and a lot of bad shari’s coffee.

Things I’d like to do with the rest of my summer

A few thing’s I’d like to do before summer ‘08 is up:

  • Portland Saturday Market
  • Another good hike
  • The essentials (Pac, Muchas, Winco)
  • Hot springs
  • Raft on the Tualatin
  • Seattle?
  • Coffee Time
  • Hoda’s
  • Road trip to Eastern Oregon–John Doe Fossil Beds, Painted Hills, Wallowas, Hell’s Canyon (I haven’t seen any of that.)
  • Swim in Willamette (in Eugene)
  • Breakfast at Cafe Sienna (in Eugene)
  • Trap mosquitoes for Lane County
  • Learn one song on guitar
  • Finish The Poisonwood Bible
  • Finish all the Students for Global Health stuff I can
  • Redesign my coop room–less clutter, more functionality, more dance space
  • All in three weeks. Ah!

My first post!

So, I realized that Web 2.0 can waste a LOT of your time, but that overall, blogs are a good idea. I think integration with all your other social-networking stuff is cool–eventually, we’ll all probably have our own sites instead of pre-built things like facebook.
